Wine Review

Montes’ vineyards are located in Chile’s Colchagua Valley and planted on soils derived from granite with areas of red clay and organic matter. This type of soil has moderate moisture retention because it is formed by alluvial sediments with stones at depth. The Montes Cabernet Sauvignon grows on flat and gently sloping lands with a north-northeast orientation.

Considered for several lists of best wines for 2016, this Montes Cabernet Sauvignon is something more than a pleasant surprise; it is eureka in a bottle! Consider its delightful flavor, its more than reasonable price and its availability at Costco or your neighborhood grocery store and you have what we will call a triple double winner! The double part is because we believe you should double your purchase with this one. So, what’s so special about it you ask? Well, in short this bargain of a wine has hidden deliciousness. Mineral, blackberry and plum combine with sweet spices to deliver a flavor profile that can match strength with a lot more expensive wines. In addition, this Cab’s gentle tannins allow for a pleasant finish to each and every gulp. Long story short friends, this Cabernet Sauvignon from Montes is one of the greatest values within the varietal.

A leader among Chilean Cabernets, aged for 12 months in French fine grain Allier oak barrels. Intense ruby color, with blackcurrant, chocolate and cigar box aromas; balanced with well-integrated oak. Great complexity of flavors in the mouth; mid-palate is full-bodied and balanced, with remarkably long finish. A superb wine ready to drink now, it can also be chosen for cellaring for future enjoyment. Our first 1987 vintage was singled out by the UK’s Wine magazine as one of the best 10-year-old red wines in the world. A ruby red, deep-colored wine. On the nose its an elegant, complex and intense wine with violets and red fruits evocations of blackberry, chocolate, black pepper and cigar box aromas while its affinity with oak lends vanilla and coffee notes, producing a wine in perfect balance of real finesse and class, a really outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grape Certified Gold Medal

The consistency the Montes Vineyards show across all wines is impeccable. It's a big reason we've reviewed two Montes wines this week. The 2011 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha Series is no exception to this tradition of excellence in winemaking. We were introduced to Montes' Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot wines 12 years ago when we first (really) began enjoying red wine. The 2011 alpha Series Cab is a wonderfully smooth red wine that's priced perfectly. Buy a few extra bottles so you can allow them to age for a few years, all the while still enjoying a glass or two tonight. We believe you'll love this Grape Certified Gold Medal winning wine, especially when paired with your favorite red meats, chicken recipes and whatever else your heart (and mouth) desire!
