This Week In Red Wine: Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 ($20) – Click 2 Buy Wine

“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Freakshow is a major sleeper in the Cabernet Sauvignon category grown in the backwaters of Lodi… This [is a] delicious, medium- to full-bodied, explosively fruity [red wine]. Drink over the next 5-6 years, although I would not be surprised to see it last even longer in a cold cellar.” – Robert Parker of Wine Advocate

Wine Review

Whether it’s the freaky label, the freakishly inexpensive price ($20), or the freaking amazing flavors, at THEGRAPE were convinced, there’s nothing about the 2012 Freakshow Cabernet that you won’t like! Grown in Lodi, one of the most unheralded and unlikely wine regions of Central California, this red wine exhibits all of the qualities that make Cabernet Sauvignon the “King of Reds” and a favorite among wine drinkers.

The first time we tried the 2012 Freakshow Cabernet we paired it with a small green salad, flank steak, grilled asparagus and bbq (baked) potatoes. Before we began this first food and wine tasting of Freakshow, we decanted the wine for 60 minutes. When we first picked up the glass, before taking the first sip, our nose(s) were immediately hit with the most wonderful aromas; aromas that were both deep and welcoming, like ripened pomegranate, plum and blackberry. After the first sip, our senses went into overload and we immediately began trying to figure out the various flavors that were exciting our taste buds. Most obvious to us were the smoke and pepper, while we all experienced a smooth impression of dark chocolate that seemed to finish consistently flavorful and flawless each and every glass.

The second time we tried the 2012 Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon we were excited and hopeful that our previous experience would be duplicated. This time we decanted it for 60 minutes but took sips at the following intervals: 1 minute, 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes. After each sip we noticed a marked difference in how much the wine opened up but it still possessed an amazing taste along the way. Why are we telling you this? Because you can drink this red wine right out of the bottle and depending on how quickly you drink each glass of wine, you’ll not only notice that the wine gets better with time, but that it’s still freakishly delicious along the way.

Simply put, the 2012 Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon is a shining example of how a big & bold red wine can be both delicious and budget friendly. And with the Michael David Winery producing 110,000 cases of this absolute gem, you’ll have plenty of chances to enjoy this winner! We strongly urge you to purchase a few bottles, if not a case or two, and experience our Grape Wine of the Month for September, the 2012 Freakshow Cabernet over several years. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Note: If you’re wondering why we’re always decanting wines this is why: even though all wines don’t need or may not benefit from decanting, we’ve learned it doesn’t hurt those wines that don’t need to be but improves those wines that benefit from being decanted, even if only for 15 minutes or more.

Winemaker’s Notes

Known for taking the road less traveled, Michael David Winery has always stood apart from the crowd. Whether it be their outlandish brands and packaging or their quirky personalities, Michael and David are definitely on a stage of their own and this wine showcases just that.

Over each vintage, the intensity has been kicked up exponentially. This 4th incarnation has more of everything…more depth, more ripe fruit, more pizazz! Nicely balanced with fruit (pomegranate) and oak (showing some smoke). Warning—it’s gulpable!
