Wine Review – Catena Malbec 2016

One of our favorite wine varietals is Malbec, a wine that consistently delivers on flavor and price; the latter, in part, we assume is because of the lesser known profile as compared to the other more popular red wines, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, among others. For us at The Grape, Malbec is a wonderful balance of sweet and spicy, and falls in between the more popular Cabernet Sauvignon (spicier, fuller) and Merlot (sweeter, lighter) wines. One might even make the argument that malbec is, in many ways, the best of both cab and merlot wines. But we don’t really need to got there because Malbec stands on its own. Malbec wines embody all that is Spanish or Latin food and drink culture, with rich flavors that not only work together, winning on every level.

That is why this weeks red wine recommendation is the 2014 – 2016 Catena Malbec. We first discovered this delicious wine in late 2014, when it was going for around $10 per bottle at local grocery stores. Not only was this a great, cheap wine, it was consistent from bottle to bottle, and those we recommended it to could not have agreed more. And while we may not have fawned over it as much as we did two of our all-time favorite wines, Freakshow Cabernet and Amalya Malbec, it serves as a more than worthy substitute when w’re unable to find either of those wines, especially when their popularity skyrocketed, making them more and more difficult to find.

The beauty of this red wine is its varietal consistency. Year after year the Catena Malbec has passed with flying flavors, if you will. The 2014 Catena Malbec is a winner. Look for and grab a bottle of this vintage if it’s still available. Can’t find the 2014? The 2015 Catena Malbec carries on the tradition of previous vintages, and we’re confident you’ll enjoy it just as much. And don’t sleep on the 2016 Catena Malbec, which is another shining example of how consistent Catena wines are.

The Catena Malbec is a deep violet color with hints of purple. By choosing the grape varietals from four vineyards, Catena is able to blend a more uniquely, intense set of flavors. Some of the flavors we experienced include blackberry, mocha (chocolate), and juicy red fruits. Other flavors you may experience include vanilla, cinnamon, blueberry and lavender. Some simple pairing suggestions include TheGrape’s Grilled Salmon or Grilled Steak recipes. Do you have a favorite pasta recipe with red sauce? This wine will only make your meal that much more enjoyable. Thanksgiving is around the corner, so if you plan on roasting or smoking a turkey, the Catena Malbec will complement that perfectly.

The impressive 2015 Catena Malbec is subtle, balanced and elegant... Great value for money. -- Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate

Now that you’re hip to the game, we suggest you stock up on this, not so rare, and incredibly delicious, Argentinian red wine. The 2014 to 2016 Catena Malbec is crafted to drink today, tomorrow and whenever the mood calls for a delicious glass of red wine. In the grape vintages to come, we fully expect future Catena Malbec wines to be as good in future vintages as they have been in years past, if not better, so we suggest you grab at least a ½ case, or 6 bottles, of this diamond in the rough.
