Balleto Estate Pinot Noir Wine Review
The 2012 Balletto Russian River Valley Estate Pinot Noir is an affordable ($24.99), award winning red wine under $25, from Balletto Vineyard’s Russian River Valley, CA Estate. We’ve chosen this as our February/March wine of the month because the Pinot Noir grape varietal makes a versatile red wine that is light enough to appeal to those wine drinkers who prefer lighter bodied red wines, while possessing enough flavor to appeal to full-bodied wine drinkers. We think you’ll agree once you have the chance to taste it and pair it with your favorite foods.
To make our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, we ferment each lot of grapes separately in 3 to 6 ton batches. We do not add commercial yeast to the tanks and instead rely on the natural yeasts found on the grapes and throughout the winery to ferment the juice. This process tends to increase the length of the fermentation and add an additional layer of complexity to the finished wine. During fermentation and barrel aging, we treat the new wine as gently as possible in an effort to preserve its aroma. The separate wine lots were racked from barrel with minimal oxygen contact for blending in early April, then sent back to barrel for three months before bottling.
The ruby-colored 2012 Balleto Estate Pinot Noir has an intense aromatic profile that begins with equal parts bright fruit (dark cherry, tart rhubarb, floral violets) and savory elements of cola, cardamom and coffee. Then, there’s a touch of dark toast and forest-floor earthliness that round out the aromas and give it extra depth. The smells are complex and ever-changing in the glass over time.
